Fall 2003
September 7th, 2003This newsletter will be more astrological than most due to the current buzz about the planet Mars, which is indeed closer to earth than it has been for 60,000 years. As most of you know I view astrology as an example of the acausal principle of synchronicity, i.e. two states of being are related in time or theme but neither causes the other to occur. A simple example would be the thousands of deaths in France during this time of Mars’ proximity.
Previous newsletters have referred to the shift from the Piscean age to the Aquarian age, which started in the 1960’s. The sign of Aquarius is ruled by the planet Uranus, which has recently entered Pisces and is currently traveling side-by-side with Mars (conjunct). These two planets provide for a rather explosive combination, correlated with accidents and sudden reversals of fortune. Uranus is the only planet in our solar system which wobbles on its axis and rotates on its side. It represents electrical energy and reversals - hence the connection to the current power outages. We will see more such events as these two travel together through the month of September.
There are other planets contributing to the mix as well. The new moon on the 27th of August has occurred at the same time as Mars has come closest to earth, and both the sun and moon are in opposition to the Mars/Uranus team. So we have seen lots of emotionalism. One manifestation is a release of anger (Mars is the god of warfare and represents our need to survive as in the fight or flight syndrome). If people around you have been extremely hotheaded this could be a part of the reason. We will continue to see accidents and hear sirens throughout this month long period. So drive carefully and be circumspect in how you discharge your feeling state.
The Sun, Venus, and Jupiter have also aligned in opposition to Mars/Uranus at this time. These three planets traveling in tandem represent the principle of love pure and simple, and to some degree of excess since Jupiter is a piece of the puzzle. Were it not for the opposition to the Gods of war and freedom this might be a time when we’d all be lolling about as characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But Uranus represents the breaking of old patterns whether we cooperate or not. Hence stifling relationships and those based on form, not content, will not survive. Both partners must be able to express themselves freely and honestly (and kindly) and be willing to participate in creating a new “form” in order to have any hope for longevity.
Pluto is part of this mix as well, creating a stressful aspect to Venus, the Sun and Moon on and around the full moon of September 10th. Every full moon involves a certain amount of stress since the masculine/rational principle of the sun and the emotional/feminine principle of the moon are as far apart as they can be (in opposition). This particular full moon involves a stressful connection to Pluto, God of the Underworld (see archives). Pluto’s influence means secrets will come to light; and if we have been putting up with a situation that is truly wrong for us we’ll need to leave it behind. We will also need to allow our loved ones to do the same, without bitterness and without engaging in self-destructive or manipulative behaviors.
All of this is occurring during a mercury retrograde period which starts at 8:38 am central on the 28th of August, and continues until 11:43 pm central on September 19th. As always, retrogrades cause us to revisit old situations and relationships in order to clear them up. In this case the clearing may seem emotionally explosive. Be willing to let go (of behaviors, ideas, situations and people who no longer serve you) during this coming month, and allow others the freedom to do the same, gently and with love. I can envision this period as a time of leaving behind a long history of dysfunctionality in relationships. It’s important for all of us to live in total integrity, in alignment with our hopes and ideals (Uranus) and to allow our loved ones the freedom to do the same.
Much love - Lynn
