May 2004
May 6th, 2004Some people are simply terrified by the Grace of God, so they have to keep re-inventing a small god that doesn’t allow the things they are prejudiced about.

Vote the liberals out of office. If you don’t do it, it ain’t gonna be done. You will be doing the Lord’s work, and he will richly reward you for it.
Sen. James Inhofe, R., OK speaking to a gathering of the Christian Coalition
One of my favorite stories about the experience of God comes from an acquaintance who had a near-death experience. She had been ejected from her convertible, in a horrible car accident and was out-of-body watching a priest give her the last rites. She had the classic experience of traveling toward the light when she “saw” God, a luminous being in a long white robe with long white hair and a full beard. She remembered saying “My God, you look exactly like you do in all the pictures.” He replied “My dear, I look exactly the way you expect me to look.”
This makes such sense to me. As a deeply spiritual being I “know” there’s a God/Goddess/creative force in the universe, though I would never disavow an atheists belief that there is not. I also believe that we tend to constellate that God-force according to our own beliefs, up-bringing, and cultural images.
Our obligation as humans is to treat others with respect and loving kindness regardless of their religious beliefs; to honor their beliefs and customs, especially when they are not the same as ours. I honestly doubt that God plays any part in choosing which side should triumph in a political battle, or for that matter which football team should score the most touchdowns. These are small gods indeed.
Given the current political situation it is sometimes hard to remain loving and non-judgmental. We must remind ourselves that each judgment is a form of violence, linking us to those we judge. We absolutely must keep our violin tuned to perfect pitch. It is incumbent on those who are more aware to keep themselves as close to perfect pitch as possible, remembering that we affect everyone around us with our attitudes. If we allow our own frequencies to become more dense as a result of the fear and hatred around us there is no hope for the world.
I had an overwhelming experience this morning. I was leaving the cleaners at the same time as an older gentleman who had been moving slowly with a cane. A primitive part of me wanted to be impatient but I smiled at him and waved him out of his space before me. He rolled down his window and asked kindly “To what do I owe this extreme act of kindness?” I burst into tears, feeling sadness for all the times I’ve chosen not to offer such a small gesture. We have to remember that acts of kindness are like ripples on the water. They affect everyone touched by them and the ripple keeps expanding. Please be kind to yourselves and to those around you. Take a walk, spend ten minutes meditating and quieting your mind every day, go to yoga class, spend time in nature, plant a tree or flowers in your yard. While it’s vital that we pay attention to world events and act in accordance with our conscience, it’s of no use if we’re angry and contribute to the increasing level of polarization in the world.
Please visit the website www.lynnwilson.net and support the organizations that are working to make the world a better place. Many of you are listed there and I encourage you to find ways to support one another. Remember to shop locally and in alignment with your higher values, and to support people in your own communities in any way you can. For those of you called to be activists please explore the websites in the political activism section. All of the real news is available as a result of the connections formed over the web - by the time corporate media reports something it has already reached critical mass in the informed population. As an example, I’m sure that many of you who rely on your local news sources haven’t realized that Nicholas Berg was a communications expert working in a tower at Abu Ghraib when he was arrested and detained by the Iraqi police and FBI, a month before the story about prisoner abuse broke. He was arrested and beheaded immediately following his release, which came about as a result of his parents filing a writ of habeas corpus with the US government. These links will lead you to that information if this is what you’re seeking.
Fear is the antecedent of violence Ignorance is the antecedent of fear Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.
