Winter 2004
October 1st, 2004Your power ends where your fear begins.

Beware fear, anger and aggression. The dark side are they.

Evil feeds on fear, and Hope floats up.
Most of us have had an emotional reaction to this election. A therapist friend says that all of her clients have been depressed, and the mood reminds her of the days after 9-11.
Younger people seem to have been hit especially hard. Susannah, a friend of my daughter’s, wrote the following: “Exit polls indicated that Americans are most concerned about protecting values. The most basic moral fiber that makes up this beloved America we revere is a celebration of equality for ALL, despite the individual agendas we may have. Since when does morality mean furthering our own interests while disregarding those of others? And since when does morality mean that we work harder to strip others of their rights than we work to embrace differences?
Gay friends feel particularly vulnerable, and with good reason. Textbooks in Texas are already being rewritten to remove any reference to a need for tolerance when discussing different lifestyles, assuring teachers that it is not a hate crime to assert that a Christian lifestyle is superior to others. Taking hate crimes off the books in states where laws have been passed denying gays legal rights of partnership, will be the next step. Can you imagine committing your life to one partner and not being allowed to visit them in the hospital? In 1990 I was traveling with my daughter Lee and stopped at a roadside motel in one of the red states. The clerk absolutely refused to give me the discounted family rate because Lee and I were not a family.
After spending a few days listening to the committee of a thousand voices in my head, I asked for guidance and what came was a visual image of a unicorn in a clearing with an energy fence around it and the following words:
Guard the Unicorn All That’s Good and Innocent Hide Them in the Forest Protect Them Call Upon Our Magical Powers Set Up An Invisible Shield Time To Play on a Whole New Level
My rational mind has had to play with this a bit, but what comes to me is that it’s vital that we not see ourselves as victims. We must protect our own goodness and innocence as well as protecting those not capable of protecting themselves, and here I would include animals and plant life. The degradation of the environment is one of the things that concerns me most. (It’s shocking that this administration will not sign the Kyoto agreement.) And in protecting our innocence we must call upon a whole new set of beliefs and strategies. There are many who will spend their time in the political arena and this is extremely important. There are others who are working in energetic dimensions and I think it’s here that more and more of us will “play”. Most of you in New Orleans participated in working to dissipate Ivan’s fury. It’s this sort of play that I think we should all practice on a daily level.
At the same time we can’t lose sight of the political realities, we musn’t let ourselves succumb to fear. One of the problems the Democratic Party has had is that it has been operating from a position of appeasement for 30 years. Democratic Senators and Congressmen passed the Patriot Act without even reading it, and Sections 411 and 802 give the government the power to imprison you for engaging in civil disobedience – imprison you as a terrorist without being charged of any crime and without benefit of legal counsel. It is incumbent upon us to find out how many people have been imprisoned and where they are. If we don’t educate ourselves as to what is happening we run the risk of repeating the mistake made in 1930’s Germany where a lot of good people tried to appease the Nazis thinking it would save them. We’ve seen the same thing in this country during the McCarthy era. We cannot afford to let it happen again, and staying informed and fearless is the solution. It does not mean we demonize “the other.” We must act with impeccability every single day. With love, not fear. With concern for those who are weaker than we are and cannot defend themselves.
My macabre sense of humor leads me to have hope in spite of it all. The evangelical/fundamentalist Christian movement has formed an unholy alliance with good old fashioned Republicans who vote the party because it supports their business philosophy. These are good people who do take care of the people in their community and must be questioning what this election has wrought. I can’t help but smile when I think back to the 1960 presidential election. I grew up in a strongly committed Republican household, and my parents were aghast at the thought of a president (Kennedy) with strong religious convictions. My mother was certain the pope would be determining domestic policy. And my guess is there are many old fashioned Republicans who feel the same way today. I can’t help but feel this alliance will turn to chaos over the next four years and we’ll have a very different party system. One of the most wonderful things to have developed as a result of this election is the turn-out of young voters and the willingness on the part of so many to educate themselves on our political processes. I’m sure that over the next ten years we’ll see something entirely new develop. And it will hopefully bring us back to the principles this country was founded on. The right of free assembly, the right of free speech, freedom of and from religion. There are many websites that give wonderful information about our governmental process: www.govspot.com is one.
I’ve also found previous newsletters (archived on the website) to be pertinent in chronicling the progression to this point.
Fall 2001 speaks of the need to live as if we have no secrets, and refers to the social consequences of an authoritarian family structure. In a post-election interview on CBS the interviewee stated that we have returned to Father Knows Best, rather than The Times They Are A changing.
Spring 2002 speaks of the need to take care of ourselves in times of darkness and fear. We are indeed in that period and I see this as a classic healing crisis. Often when we’re ready to make a quantum leap in healing physically or emotionally, the old symptom rears it’s head in magnified form before being released.
Spring 2003 addresses the dilemma of being both a spiritual being and a political activist. Reference is made to the connection between the two Gulf Wars and oil politics, including Halliburton’s profiteering.
June 2003 addresses the parallels between physics and mysticism and the need to choose love, not fear.
February 2004 has more on the physics/mysticism parallel, and speaks of the need to keep our own instrument/self finely tuned in periods of change.
May 2004 addresses the difference between little god and Big God.
I do believe this is all part of the shift to a new world/universe order in the best possible sense of the phrase and we must keep our instrument-selves tuned to a very fine pitch. It is the best possible way to affect those around us while keeping ourselves sane and safe. A wonderful woman that I consider a mentor once said “There are no safe places, only safe people.”
God takes care of children, lunatics and artists. Rebecca Venable
